लहानपणी ‘Solomon Grundy’ कविता वाचलीय? तोच तो, ज्याचा प्रवास‘Born on a Monday’ला  सुरू होऊन ‘Buried on Sunday’ला संपला.

हा लेखक म्हणजे एरवी त्या सॉलोमनचीच एक आवृत्ती. पुण्याच्या पेठेतला जन्म,अकरावी-बारावी सायन्स, मग इंजिनिअरिंग, मग सेल्समध्ये नोकरी अशीच त्याचीहीगोष्ट झाली असती. पण सुदैवाने  लहानपणीच पु.लं.नी पुस्तकरूपी हात डोक्यावर ठेवलाआणि ‘रसिकता’ हा – त्यांच्याच भाषेत – ‘अलौकिक दैवीगुण’ वाढीला लागला.

१९९४च्या राष्ट्रीय खेळांमध्ये स्वयंसेवक म्हणून काम करण्याची संधी मिळालीआणि शायनी विल्सन, धनराज  पिल्ले, राजीव बालकृष्णन, भाग्यश्री बिले, बहादूरप्रसाद यांसारख्या तेव्हाच्या हीरोज् ना जवळून बघता आलं.  आणि तिथ पासून खेळ,खेळाडू आणि सामन्यांचा आस्वाद घ्यायची सवयच लागली. लेखकाचा  आयुष्यातलापहिला ‘क्रश ’ झाला तोच स्टेफी ग्राफवर आणि भक्ती जडली ती सचिन तेंडुलकरवर!

फेडरर, दिएगो मॅरेडोना, लिन डॅन, राहुल द्रविड हीच दैवतं आणि लॉर्ड्‌स, विम्बल्डन,कॅम्प नोऊ, ईडन  गार्डन्स हीच तीर्थक्षेत्रं! एखाद्या बॅकहँड क्रॉसकोर्टने, कव्हर ड्राईव्हनेकिंवा ड्रॅग फ्लिकने घायाळ होणं  आणि खिलाडूवृत्तीच्या एखाद्या कृतीने भावुक होणं हेयाच्यासाठी नेहमीचंच.

खेळ आणि खेळाडूंवरच्या निस्सिम प्रेमानेच आशुतोष समाजमाध्यमांवर लिहिताझाला आणि वाचकांकडून  मिळालेली दाद आणि झालेल्या कौतुकाचीच फलश्रुतीम्हणजे ‘एका खेळियाने’!

Have you ever read the poem “Solomon Grundy” as a child? That’s exactly him the same journey that begins with “Born on a Monday” and ends with “Buried on  Sunday.” Essentially, this author is like another version of that Solomon. Born in  the Peth area of Pune, his story could have been just like any ordinary path:  science in 11th–12th grades, then engineering, followed by a job in sales.

But fortunately, as a child, Pu. La. (Pu La Deshpande) placed books in his hands,  and the “rasikta” (refined taste or aesthetic sensibility)—what the writer calls a “divine and extraordinary gift”—started developing in him.

In 1994, during the National Games, he got an opportunity to work as a volunteer,  which allowed him to watch heroes of that time up close—Shiny Wilson, Dhanraj Pillay, Rajeev Balakrishnan, Bhagyashree Bille, Bahadur  Prasad, among others. From that moment onward, he developed a habit of  immersing himself in sports, players, and matches.

His first “crush” was on Steffi Graf, and his devotion was born for Sachin Tendulkar! Athletes like Roger Federer, Diego Maradona, Lin Dan, Rahul Dravid  became his idols, and venues such as Lord’s, Wimbledon, Camp Nou, and  Eden Gardens became his pilgrimage sites. For him, getting thrilled by a  backhand crosscourt, a cover drive, or a drag flick—or being moved by a player’s attitude or action—is a constant experience.

It is this boundless love for sports and players that led Ashutosh to write on  social media, and the appreciation and admiration he received from readers  culminated in the creation of his book: “Eka Kheliyane” (By a Player).
