Swara Vyanjani
A Swara (vowel) is a sound that is independent. Even if the sound is held for a long time, it does not change. For example, say “O” and hold it for 10 seconds. From start to finish, does the pronunciation change? No. The sound remains “O” throughout.
Now, instead of “O,” say “Bo” and hold it continuously for 10 seconds. What happens? After the initial “B,” the sound of “Bo” quickly turns into “O,” and it stays “O” until the end. This shows that the full pronunciation of “B” requires the support of the vowel “A.”
Therefore, the alphabet of vowels (A’s barakhadi) are called Swara, and all the sounds from “Ka,” “Kha,” “Ga,” “Gha” up to “Gya” that require the support of a vowel are called Vyanjani (consonants).
