Swara Vyanjani

Author(s):  Prasad Pathare (Prapat)

Swara (vowel) is a sound that is independent. Even if the sound is held for a long time, it  does not change. For example, say “O” and hold it for 10 seconds. From start to finish,     does the pronunciation change? No. The sound remains “O” throughout.

Now, instead of “O,” say “Bo” and hold it continuously for 10 seconds. What happens? After  the initial “B,” the sound of “Bo” quickly turns into “O,” and it stays “O” until the end.  This shows that the full pronunciation of “B” requires the support of the vowel “A.”

Therefore, the alphabet of vowels (A’s barakhadi) are called Swara, and all the sounds from “Ka,” “Kha,” “Ga,” “Gha” up to “Gya” that require the support of a vowel are called Vyanjani  (consonants).

निरर्थक rhymes (ring-aring a roses, twin-kle twinkle little star, rain rain go away) म्हणत असतात.

Origin of Swara and Vyanjani

A few days after I published my fifth and only complete English book, Grandpa Baba Rhymes, in Pune, Amit Tekale of Menaka Prakashan came to meet me along with his learned wife. After our light and casual conversation ended, Amit dropped a little suggestion, saying, “Create similar rhymes for children aged 6 to 12 studying in Marathi schools. Prepare a book like this. There is a special need for it now.”

A few days later, we were going to America to visit Pranali’s home. So, I said, “We will definitely do this after we return.” But Amit had, in that moment, planted a powerful idea in my mind. What I had planned to do after returning to India began the moment I landed in America, and three and a half months later, I returned to my homeland with a bundle of new poems.

I had always known that there was a need for new poems for schoolchildren, which is why I had created rhymes for students in English-medium schools. Even though 75 years have passed since India gained independence, young children in English-medium schools are still learning highly meaningless rhymes brought to India by the British (like Ring-a-ring o’ roses, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Rain Rain Go Away). That is why I prepared my new book of rhymes.

Our current third generation is extremely intelligent…
