महिला आणि बाल आरोग्य क्षेत्रात काम करणाऱ्या डॉ. बानू कोयाजी यांची आज जन्मशताब्दी आहे. डॉ. कोयाजी केईएम हॉस्पिटल आणि ‘सकाळ’च्या माजी संचालक होत्या. या निमित्ताने सकाळ प्रकाशन ‘बानूबाई’ हे चरित्रपर पुस्तक प्रकाशित करत आहे. या पुस्तकाची संकल्पना, संशोधन आणि लेखन डॉ. बानू कोयाजी यांच्यासोबत काम केलेल्या डॉ. प्रतिभा कुलकर्णी यांचे आहे.

बानूबाईंनी आपल्या कार्यकाळात ४० रुग्णव्यवस्थेच्या केईएम हॉस्पिटलचा विस्तार ५५० रुग्णव्यवस्थेइतक्या मोठ्या हॉस्पिटलमध्ये केला. शिवाय वैद्यकीय क्षेत्रांतील नवनवीन आव्हानांना सामोरे जाण्यासाठी, समस्या निराकरणासाठी त्यांनी केईएम रिसर्च सेंटरची स्थापना केली. आर्थिकदृष्ट्या दुर्बल लोकांना आरोग्यसेवेपासून वंचित राहावे लागू नये, यासाठी सोशल वर्क डिपार्टमेंटची स्थापना केली. ग्रामीण भागातील लोकांपर्यंत आरोग्यसेवा पोहोचवण्यासाठी त्यांनी ग्रामीण आरोग्य क्षेत्रात नमुनादर्श ठरेल असा प्रकल्प वढू येथे राबवला.

ग्रामीण आरोग्य क्षेत्रातील त्यांच्या कार्याचा गौरव आंतरराष्ट्रीय स्तरावर रॅमन मॅगसेसे पुरस्काराने केला गेला; तर भारत शासनाने त्यांना ‘पद्म भूषण’ देऊन गौरवले.

Today marks the birth centenary of Dr. Banoo Coyaji, who worked extensively in the field of women’s and child health. Dr. Coyaji was the former director of KEM Hospital and Sakal. On this occasion, Sakal Prakashan is publishing a biographical book titled Banubai. The concept, research, and writing of this book have been done by Dr. Pratibha Kulkarni, who worked closely with Dr. Coyaji.

During her tenure, Dr. Coyaji expanded KEM Hospital from a 40-bed facility into a large hospital with a capacity of 550 beds. Additionally, to address emerging challenges in the medical field and to find solutions to various health issues, she established the KEM Research Centre. To ensure that economically weaker sections were not deprived of healthcare services, she founded a Social Work Department. She also implemented a model rural health project at Vadhu to deliver healthcare services to people in rural areas.

Her contributions to rural healthcare were recognized internationally with the Ramon Magsaysay Award, and the Government of India honored her with the Padma Bhushan.
