जयश्री काळे यांना “जागृती” या संस्थेच्या माध्यमातून सामाजिक कार्याला सुरुवात करून फेब्रुवारी २०२३ मध्ये २५ वर्षे पूर्ण झाली. या निमित्ताने संस्थेच्या कामाचा, स्वत:च्या अनुभवांचा आणि एकूणच जडणघडणीचा एक लेखाजोखा त्यांनी या पुस्तकात मांडला आहे.

ज्ञानपीठ विजेते मराठी कवी विंदा करंदीकर हे जयश्री काळे यांचे वडील. आयुष्याच्या सुरुवातीला आपल्या आई-वडीलांनी अंगी बाणवलेले सामाजिक भान, इतरांना निरपेक्ष भावनेने मदत करण्याची वृत्ती आणि विवाहानंतर या सगळ्याला प्रोत्साहन आणि चालना देणारे सासू-सासरे यांच्या संस्कार आणि पाठिंब्याचे ऋण जयश्रीताई वेळोवेळी या पुस्तकात मान्य करतात.

यानंतरच्या अनेक प्रकरणांमध्ये जागृती या संस्थेच्या कामाचा, संस्थेने हाताळलेल्या विविध प्रश्नांचा आढावा जयश्री काळे यांनी छोटेखानी लेखांमधून घेतला आहे. यात कुठेही श्रेय घेण्याची धडपड नाही, परोपकाराची भावना नाही.

या पुस्तकाच्या शेवटी संस्थेतर्फे घेण्यात आलेल्या विविध उपक्रमांची छायाचित्रे आणि सांख्यिकीय माहितीही उपलब्ध करून देण्यात आली आहे. ज्येष्ठ लेखक, संगणकतज्ज्ञ अच्युत गोडबोले यांची प्रस्तावना या पुस्तकाला लाभली आहे. ते आपल्या प्रस्तावनेच्या शेवटी म्हणतात, “एका बाजूने म्हणावं तर हे जयाचं आत्मचरित्र आहे, म्हणावं तर ही जागृतीची कहाणी आहे आणि या दोन्ही गोष्टी खऱ्या आहेतच; पण त्याचबरोबर आपल्याला या पुस्तकात या समाजाचं, त्यातल्या सुखदुःखांचं, त्यातल्या गरजवंतांचं, त्यातल्या अनेक प्रश्नांचं आणि ते सोडवण्यासाठी मदत करण्यासाठी उभं राहणाऱ्यांचं एक जिवंत चित्रही जया आपल्यासमोर चितारते.”

Jayashree Kale began her social work through the organization “Jagruti”, and by February 2023, she had completed 25 years of service. On this occasion, she has presented an account of the organization’s work, her personal experiences, and her overall journey in this book. Her father is the Jnanpith award-winning Marathi poet Vinda Karandikar. Early in her life, Jayashree imbibed from her parents a sense of social responsibility and the habit of helping others selflessly, which was further encouraged and supported by her in-laws after marriage. She acknowledges the influence and guidance of her family throughout her life in the book.

In the subsequent chapters, Jayashree Kale reviews the work of Jagruti and the various issues the organization has addressed, through concise essays. The narrative is free from any attempt to claim credit or show self-glorification; it reflects a spirit of altruism. At the end of the book, photographs and statistical information about various initiatives undertaken by the organization are also provided.

The book features a foreword by senior writer and computer expert Achyut Godbole. At the conclusion of his foreword, he writes:

“On one hand, this can be called Jayashree’s autobiography; on the other, it is the story of Jagruti. Both are true, but at the same time, this book presents a vivid picture of society — its joys and sorrows, its needy people, the challenges faced, and those who stand up to help solve them. Jayashree paints this living picture for us.”
