These folktales about woodcutters from different countries are distinctive because they do not attempt to glorify the woodcutter emotionally. In many stories, he behaves so foolishly that he may even seem ridiculous, and the tales do not hide this aspect of his character. He is naïve and lacks practical wisdom, which makes him trust others too easily. He often says the wrong things at the wrong time. He does not understand tricks or schemes, and he frequently fails to make wise use of the rewards he receives. His foolishness perfectly fits the global archetype of the “wise fool.” In Indian terms, he possesses a childlike innocence and simplicity.

The stories in this book are based on folktales from various countries. Although the characters bear Indian names, the original tales come from different nations and languages, having traveled through diverse regions, landscapes, and cultures.

This book is engaging for readers of all ages—children and adults alike, scholars and storytellers. These stories must be read to hear the quiet wisdom of the axe and the forest that echoes through folklore, and to discover within the woodcutter’s character a lesson on how human beings should live. Drawn in the two vivid shades of honesty and innocence, his character offers timeless insights into life and human nature.
