About this book

Dr. Rajendra Singh, affectionately known as Rajinder and widely recognized across India as the "Waterman of India," breathed new life into the country's dying rivers decades ago. Rather than damming rivers, he focused on nurturing and restoring the land surrounding them. With the support of the dedicated workers of the Tarun Bharat Sangh, he revived traditional Indian water conservation and irrigation systems by planting grass and shrubs. Through these efforts, he demonstrated that even regions with minimal rainfall and shrinking rivers such as the Sherni and Parvati could regain healthy and sustainable water flow.

This book is the true and inspiring story of how drought-stricken land was transformed into a green and fertile landscape, and how dry riverbeds once again flowed with abundant water. It features firsthand accounts from villagers who witnessed these changes, portraying not only an environmental transformation but also a social revolution. It is a story of vulnerable and fearful communities becoming protectors of their own future, and of struggling families evolving into prosperous and self-reliant communities.

The book illustrates how villagers used income generated from water chestnut cultivation and fish farming to build schools, dig wells, and turn their shared dreams into reality.

More than emphasizing the importance of water conservation, this story is about trust, self-confidence, and hope. It shows that when ordinary people unite to achieve the extraordinary goal of reconnecting with nature, they not only restore the environment but also reclaim their place in society and build a brighter future for generations to come.
