Ragunath Mashelkar

Raghunath Mashelkar, an exceptionally optimistic individual, is a unique and multifaceted personality. In 1998, he was honored with the prestigious J. R. D. Tata Corporate Leadership Award, a distinction reserved specifically for outstanding Indians. He was also elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1998—one of the highest honors granted to scientists who have carved a distinctive path in the world of research.

Later, he pioneered the concept of “Gandhian Engineering”, which emphasizes “getting more from less for more people,” aimed at fulfilling the needs of the poor. He often explains that this vision was shaped by his own struggles—studying under streetlights due to extreme poverty. Having personally experienced hardship, he deeply understands the realities of deprivation.

Mashelkar played a crucial role in reclaiming India’s intellectual property rights over traditional knowledge such as turmeric and basmati rice from claims made in the United States. At the same time, he encouraged a reverse flow of modern knowledge and technology by granting licenses to certain multinational companies in the U.S., thereby establishing a new trend.

He has served as a member of the boards of leading Indian companies like Tata Group and Reliance Industries. As a mark of global recognition, 28 universities worldwide have awarded him honorary doctorates. The government has shown great trust in him by appointing him to chair twelve powerful committees addressing critical and persistent national issues.

Under his leadership, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), one of the world’s largest networks of laboratories, witnessed unprecedented transformation. This progress was considered among the top ten achievements of science and technology in the twentieth century.

He has been honored with the Padma Bhushan by the President of India and the “Star of Asia” award presented by former U.S. President George W. Bush.

Mashelkar once said,

"If God were to grant me one wish, it would be this—let my dream come true: that by 2050, India once again emerges as a nation leading the world."
