Kathavatthu

Author(s):  Asanga Tilakaratne

This study begins with an analysis of logical principles and rules along with the unique methods followed in the Kathavatthu, a text taken by some scholars as representing the earliest Indian logic. How conceptual analysis, exemplifying an advanced stage in Indian philosophical thinking, has been used in this ancient Buddhist text forms a significant part of the present study. Doctrinal and philosophical aspects of the debates are studied with reference to some key issues of debate, such as personalism, realism, and transcendentalism. In order to enable the reader to get a close exposure to the actual modes and content of debates, those debates that are being studied have been translated into English anew. The study contains in-depth access to this early Buddhist text, which marks a milestone in Indian and Buddhist intellectual history.
