माणूस जन्माला येताना तीन ऋणे बरोबर घेऊन येतो असे भारतीय परंपरा सांगते. ही परंपरागत समजूत सर्वच मानवांना लागू होते असे म्हणायला काहीच हरकत नाही. इतकी ती सर्वव्यापक आहे. साहजिकच ती महाराष्ट्रातील लोकांनाही लागू होते. पण देवऋण, ऋषीऋण आणि पितृऋण यांच्याशिवाय महाराष्ट्रातील माणसे आणखी एक ऋण बरोबर घेऊन जन्माला येतात. ते ऋण म्हणजे अर्थातच छत्रपती शिवाजी महाराजांचे ऋण! छत्रपतींच्या या ऋणाची विस्ताराने चर्चा करता येईल. तथापि अगदी एकच महत्त्वाचा मुद्दा सांगायचा झाल्यास असे म्हणता येईल की महाराजांनी महाराष्ट्राला अस्मिता दिली.

‘अस्मिता’ या शब्दाच्या जवळ येणारा इंग्रजी शब्द ‘identity’ आणि दुसरा मराठी शब्द म्हणजे ‘ओळख’. मात्र ‘अस्मिता’ म्हणजे फक्त ओळख नव्हे; तर जिचा अभिमान वाटावा, जी घेऊन मिरवावेसे वाटते अशी ओळख.

महाराजांच्या राज्याभिषेकदिन साजरा करणे ही महाराष्ट्रातील लोक अत्यंत मनापासून करत आलेली कृती आहे. हा दिवस आनंदाचा असल्यामुळे तो तसाच उत्साह आणि उत्सवपूर्वक साजरा करायलाच हवा, पण तो केवळ एक ‘event’ एवढ्यापुरते त्याचे स्वरूप मर्यादित न ठेवता रामदासांनी म्हटल्याप्रमाणे शिवरायांच्या विविध गुणांचा व कृतींचा स्मरणदिन म्हणूनही त्याच्याकडे पाहिले पाहिजे. त्यांचे स्मरण हे सदैव स्फूर्तिदायक आणि मार्गदर्शक ठरेल यात शंका नाही.

According to Indian tradition, every human being is born bearing three sacred debts—the debt to the gods (Deva Rin), the debt to the sages (Rishi Rin), and the debt to one's ancestors (Pitru Rin). This timeless belief is universal in spirit and can be applied to all humanity. For the people of Maharashtra, however, there is a fourth debt that they inherit at birth—the debt owed to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

The significance of this debt can be explained in many ways, but perhaps its greatest expression lies in the fact that Shivaji Maharaj gave Maharashtra its identity and self-respect. The English word closest to the Marathi term Asmita is identity, but Asmita means much more than mere identification. It signifies an identity that inspires pride, dignity, and a deep sense of belonging—an identity one cherishes and proudly upholds.

The celebration of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's Coronation Day has long been a heartfelt tradition among the people of Maharashtra. As a joyous occasion, it should certainly be observed with enthusiasm and festivity. However, its significance should not be confined to being merely an annual event. As Samarth Ramdas emphasized, this day should also serve as an occasion to remember Shivaji Maharaj's noble qualities, visionary leadership, and exemplary deeds. Reflecting upon his life and legacy continues to inspire, guide, and strengthen future generations, making his ideals as relevant today as they were centuries ago.

A scholar of saint literature and the social traditions of Maharashtra, and a keen commentator on contemporary events.

He served as the president of the 88th All India Marathi Literary Conference held in Ghumman.

He received the Sahitya Akademi Award for the book Tukaram Darshan.

He holds an M.A. in Philosophy, an M.A. in Ancient Indian Culture and History, and a Ph.D. titled The Gita: A Theory of Human Action, for which he received the Gurudev Damle Award for the best thesis.

Under the Career Award granted by the University Grants Commission, he conducted post-doctoral research on Krishna: The Man and His Mission.

At Pune University, he served as Head and Director of the Department of Philosophy as well as various study and research centers.

He was honored with the Maharashtra Government’s Best University Teacher Award.

Through books such as Tukaram Darshan, Lokmanya te Mahatma, Garja Maharashtra, and Maharashtrachi Lokyatra, he presented new perspectives on the cultural history of Maharashtra.

He has also published works including Trayodashi, Manthan, Prasadachi Vani, Nivadak Sakal Sant Sarth Gatha, Lokmanya Tilak Charitra, Tatiche Abhang: Ek Vivechan, Dnyanba Tukaram, Ya Sam Ha: The Intellectual Biography of Yogeshwar Krishna, Vidrohache Vyakaran: Edited Writings of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule, and The Intellectual Biography of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule.

His writing has received several prestigious awards including the Sahitya Akademi Award.

Through plays such as Ujallya Disha and Shivcharitra, he artistically portrayed aspects of Maharashtra’s political life.

He has edited many books and journals related to saint literature and social subjects.

He has traveled widely to deliver lectures, participate in seminars, and conduct discussions.

He has held positions in many governmental and non-governmental institutions such as the Sahitya Akademi, Sahitya Sanskruti Mandal, and the Language Advisory Committee.

He has maintained long-standing associations with various literary and cultural organizations.

He is the founder of the Varkari Sahitya Parishad.

He served as the president of the first All India Marathi Saint Literature Conference (2012).

He has also served as the chairman of the Language Advisory Committee and the Sahitya Sanskruti Mandal.
