The Genetic Wedding Ring

भारतीय चित्रपटसृष्टी किंवा नाट्यसृष्टीत विज्ञानावर आधारित कलाकृती कमी संख्येने आढळतात.  त्या पार्श्वभूमीवर द जेनेटिक वेडिंग रिंग ही विज्ञानावर आधारित ( सायन्स फिक्शन)  व त्यातही जेनेटिक इंजिनियरिंग या विषयावरील जगातील आगळीवेगळी प्रेमकथा आहे.  
खेड्यातून शहरात आलेला अभिजित आणि शहरातच वाढलेली विनया केवळ ‘जेनेटिक इंजिनियर्स नव्हते. ते प्रेमी होते. त्यांनी एकत्रपणे ‘जेनेटिक मॉडिफाइड’ भुईमूग तयार करण्याचे तंत्रज्ञान विकसित केले होते. त्यात दोन जीन्स होते. एक विनयाने शोधलेला. दुष्काळातही चांगले पीक देणारा. आणि दुसरा होता अभिजीतने शोधलेला. पिकात बीटा कॅरोटीन अर्थात प्रो व्हिटॅमिन ए आणि लोह तयार करणारा. 
दोघेही लग्नाच्या बंधनात अडकणार होते. हे दोन जीन्स म्हणजे होत्या त्यांच्या ‘वेडिंग रिंग्ज’. या दोन्ही जीन्सच्या किंवा तंत्रज्ञानाच्या रूपाने वनस्पतीत म्हणजेच निसर्गात आणि अगदी मृत्यूनंतरही कायम एकत्र राहण्याची त्यांची इच्छा होती.   
पण युरोपात ‘जेनेटिक इंजिनियरिंग’ तंत्रज्ञानाने तयार झालेल्या गायीचे दूध प्यायल्यामुळे एका चिमुरड्या मुलीचा मृत्यू झाला. जगभरात खळबळ उडाली. तंत्रज्ञान ‘बॅन’ करा असा जोर वाढू लागला. हे तंत्रज्ञान वापरायचे की नाही, वापरले तर कुठे? कसे? निसर्गाची सीमारेषा ओलांडली तर काय होईल? अभिजित आणि विनयात मतभेद झाले. दोघे वेगळे झाले.
पण पुढे अद्भुत घटना घडली. दोघांनी तयार केलेला भुईमूग कुठल्याशा शेतकऱ्याच्या शेतात वाढला होता. त्यानं शेतकरी कुटुंबाच्या जीवनात केवळ समृद्धी आणली नव्हती. तर अभिजित आणि विनयाला पुन्हा एकत्र आणलं होतं. दोघांचे दोन जीन्स त्या पिकात नांदत होते. हे बियाणं पुढेही पेरलं जाणार आणि जीन्सच्या रूपानं दोघे कायम एकमेकांसोबत राहणार. मृत्यूनंतरही... कधीच ताटातूट न होण्यासाठी.

In Indian cinema and theatre, works based on science are relatively rare. Against this backdrop, The Genetic Wedding Ring is a unique science fiction love story centered on genetic engineering.

Abhijit, who came from a village to the city, and Vinaya, who grew up in the city, were not just genetic engineers—they were lovers. Together, they developed a genetically modified groundnut. It carried two genes: one discovered by Vinaya, which could yield good crops even in drought conditions, and the other discovered by Abhijit, which enabled the crop to produce beta-carotene (pro-vitamin A) and iron.

They were about to get married. These two genes were their symbolic “wedding rings.” Through this technology, they wished to remain united forever—in plants, in nature, and even after death.

However, a shocking incident occurred in Europe: a young girl died after consuming milk from a genetically engineered cow. This created global uproar, and demands to ban such technology intensified. Questions arose—Should this technology be used? If yes, where and how? What happens if we cross the boundaries of nature? These conflicts led to disagreements between Abhijit and Vinaya, and they separated.

But then, something extraordinary happened. The groundnut they had developed was growing in a farmer’s field. It not only brought prosperity to the farmer’s family but also reunited Abhijit and Vinaya. Their two genes were living together in that crop. The seeds would continue to be sown, and in the form of genes, they would remain together forever—even after death—never to be separated again.
