Classical music is loved by many, but a lot of people don’t really understand it. Because of this, they are unable to fully experience its true joy. Recognizing this, renowned classical and light music singer Sayali Panse Shelikeri began writing a column titled “Gandhar” in the Sakal Saptarang supplement. In a short span of time, this column became popular among both general music lovers and serious learners.
This book is a compilation of those writings. It not only introduces the history of classical music and legendary vocalists and instrumentalists, but also explains what a classical music concert (mehfil) is, its key elements, and concepts such as sam, raga, aroh avroh (ascending and descending notes), palte, and taans in a very simple and easy-to-understand language.
The author also clearly explains concepts like different gharanas (musical traditions) and word-oriented singing styles. Additionally, the book provides insights into popular light songs and the ragas on which they are based.
