“Krantichandra”, written by K. P. Deshpande, is a novel based on the life of Chandrashekhar Azad. Along with portraying his personality, the novel also presents a vivid picture of the pre-independence era in India. Azad’s personality evolved according to the circumstances of his life. He grew up in a social environment marked by religious orthodoxy, untouchability, caste discrimination, and conservative attitudes toward women. The novel gives a realistic account of how he rose from such surroundings to become one of the leading revolutionary leaders of the 1930s.
To achieve India’s independence, revolutionaries like Bhagat Singh, Bhagwati Charan Vohra, and Azad adopted the path of armed revolution. During that period, this struggle held great significance, and the novel strongly highlights its importance. Although the novel is highly engaging, it also presents a realistic portrayal of the revolutionary movement and the personalities of the revolutionaries involved. Because of this authentic depiction, the work stands as an important historical document.
