शेती सुधारण्यासाठी, तिच्यावर अवलंबून असलेल्या शेतकरी कुटुंबांचे जीवनमान उंचावण्यात्ताठी प्राधान्याने काम करण्याची गरज आहे.

दुष्काळी टापूतील हिवरे बाजार, राळेगण सिद्धी, कडवंची यांसह अनेक गावांनी पाणलोट विकासातून विकासाचे नवे आणि शाश्वत मॉडेल उभारून दाखवले आहे. त्याचे इतर गावांनी अनुकरण करणे इतकेच बाकी आहे. अर्थात, ते सोपे नाही आणि अशक्यही नाही.

दुष्काळ आणि सातत्याने उदभवणाऱ्या टंचाई स्थितीवर मात करण्यासाठी सकाळ माध्यम समूहाने व्यापक आणि अभ्यासपूर्ण प्रयत्न सुरू केले आहेत. 'अग्रोवन'च्या वर्धापनदिनी पाणी या विषयावर राज्यातील तज्ज्ञांच्या लेखांचा समावेश असलेल्या पुरवण्यांतील निवडक लेखांचा समावेश प्रस्तुत पुस्तकात करण्यात आला आहे. अनेक गावांनी एकत्र येऊन पाण्याचे योग्य नियोजन करून दुष्काळावर मात करण्यासाठी भगीरथ प्रयत्न केले आणि तपत यशही मिळवले, या प्रेरणादायी सामूहिक यशकथाही पुस्तकांचे उपयुक्तता मूल्य वाढवणाऱ्या आहेत. विविध भागांतील अनेक शेतकऱ्यांच्या पाण्याच्या सुयोग्य वापराबाबतच्या यशकथाही या पुस्तकात पाहायला मिळतील. त्या अर्थाने ही शेतीतील उत्तम पाणी वापराची 'गीता' ठरावी.

हातावर हात ठेवून 'सरकारने सारे काही करावे,' अशी अपेक्षा आपण करत असू तर ती चुकीबी आहे आणि ते काळाने वारंवार सिद्धही केले आहे. पाण्यासाठी संघर्ष करण्यापेक्षा आपल्या गावशिवारात पडणारे पाणी आपल्या उपयोगात कसे आणता येईल याचे नियोजन आणि त्याची अंमलबजावणीही करावी लागेल. ते केले तरच शेती तगेल आणि शेतकरी जगेल. प्रस्तुत पुस्तकाचा हाच संदेश आहे.

There is a pressing need to prioritize efforts aimed at improving agriculture and raising the standard of living of farmer families who depend on it.

Villages such as Hivre Bazar, Ralegan Siddhi, and Kadwanchi, located in drought-prone regions, have demonstrated new and sustainable models of development through watershed management. What remains is for other villages to follow their example. Of course, this is not easy—but it is certainly not impossible.

If we simply sit back and expect the government to do everything, it is a mistaken belief—something time has repeatedly proven. Instead of struggling for water, we must plan how to utilize the rainfall in our own villages and implement those plans effectively. Only then can agriculture survive, and only then can farmers thrive.
