Nisrgane Dila Anandkand : Dr. Madhav Gadgil

माधव गाडगीळ (२४ मे १९४२ – ७ जानेवारी २०२६) हे भारतातील प्रख्यात पर्यावरणशास्त्रज्ञ, विचारवंत आणि लेखक होते, ज्यांनी जैवविविधता संवर्धन आणि शाश्वत विकास या क्षेत्रांत मोलाचे योगदान दिले. त्यांनी हार्वर्ड विद्यापीठातून उच्च शिक्षण घेतले आणि नंतर भारतीय विज्ञान संस्थेत (आयआयएससी), बेंगळुरू येथे दीर्घकाळ कार्यरत राहून सेंटर फॉर इकॉलॉजिकल सायन्सेसची स्थापना केली. भारतातील पर्यावरण धोरणांच्या निर्मितीत त्यांनी महत्त्वाची भूमिका बजावली; विशेषतः वेस्टर्न घाट्स इकॉलॉजी एक्स्पर्ट पॅनेल (गाडगीळ आयोग) यांचे नेतृत्व केले तसेच जैवविविधता कायद्याच्या निर्मितीत योगदान दिले. लेखक म्हणून त्यांनी अनेक प्रभावी पुस्तके आणि संशोधन निबंध लिहिले; त्यामध्ये “दिस फिशर्ड लँड” हे पुस्तक विशेष प्रसिद्ध आहे. मराठीतूनही त्यांनी पर्यावरणाबाबत जनजागृती केली. आपल्या उल्लेखनीय कार्यासाठी त्यांना पद्मभूषणसह अनेक सन्मान प्राप्त झाले. मानव विकास आणि पर्यावरण संरक्षण यांचा समतोल राखण्याचा त्यांचा संदेश आजही प्रेरणादायी आहे.

Madhav Gadgil (24 May 1942 – 7 January 2026) was a renowned Indian ecologist, environmental thinker, and author, widely respected for his pioneering contributions to biodiversity conservation and sustainable development. Educated at Harvard University, he later served for many years at the Indian Institute of Science, where he founded the Centre for Ecological Sciences. He played a key role in shaping India’s environmental policies, notably leading the Western Ghats Ecology Expert Panel and contributing to the Biological Diversity Act. As an author, he wrote several influential books and numerous research papers, including the well-known work This Fissured Land, and also published widely in Marathi to promote environmental awareness. Over his distinguished career, he received several prestigious honors, including the Padma Bhushan, and is remembered for advocating a balance between human development and environmental conservation.
