सरदेसाई यांचा जन्म १० एप्रिल १९३३ रोजी झाला. मुंबईत १९५५ मध्ये एमबीबीएस आणि १९५८ मध्ये एमडी (मेडिसीन) ही पदवी घेतल्यानंतर सरदेसाई उच्च शिक्षणासाठी लंडनला गेले. एमबीबीएस ला त्यांना प्रीव्हेंटिव्ह मेडिसीन आणि फॉरेन्सिक मेडिसीन या विषयांत विशेष प्रावीण्य मिळाले. स्त्रीरोग व प्रसूतिशास्त्र विषयात त्यांनी सुवर्णपदक मिळवले. मेंदू, मज्जासंस्था आदींशी निगडित न्यूरॉलॉजी या विषयात एमडी पदवी घेऊन ते १९६०मध्ये भारतात परतले. पुण्यात परतल्यानंतर त्यांनी लक्ष्मी रस्त्यावर कुंटे चौकात दवाखाना सुरू केला. वैद्यकीय व्यवसायाबरोबरच लेखन आणि व्याख्यान या माध्यमातून त्यांनी नागरिकांच्या आरोग्याबद्दल व्यापक जागृती घडवली. पुण्याच्या सार्वजनिक जीवनाशी एकरूप होऊन ते शहराच्या आरोग्य व्यवस्थेचे आधारवड झाले. वैद्यकीय क्षेत्रातील ऋषितुल्य व्यक्तिमत्त्व म्हणून त्यांच्याकडे आदराने पाहिले जायचे. डॉ. सरदेसाई यांनी १९८५पर्यंत बी. जे. वैद्यकीय महाविद्यालयात अध्यापनाचे काम केले. या काळात त्यांनी अनेक वैद्यकीय तज्ज्ञ घडवले. महाविद्यालयात शिकवताना इंग्रजी भाषा; मात्र लोकांना व्याख्यान देताना पूर्णपणे मराठी भाषेचा वापर ते करत. ते सूचनापत्रे, म्हणजेच प्रीस्क्रिप्शनही मराठीत लिहीत. औषध कसे घ्यावे, या सूचना ते मराठीत लिहीत. सरदेसाई यांनी अनेक संस्थांचे अध्यक्षपद भूषविले.

H. V. Sardesai was born on 10 April 1933. He completed his MBBS in 1955 and  MD (Medicine) in 1958 in Mumbai, after which he went to London for higher studies. During his MBBS, he achieved special proficiency in Preventive Medicine and  Forensic Medicine, and he was awarded a gold medal in Obstetrics and Gynecology. He later specialized in Neurology, a field related to the brain and nervous  system, and returned to India in 1960.

After coming back to Pune, he started his clinic at Kunte Chowk on Laxmi Road.  Along with his medical practice, he created widespread awareness about  public health through his writing and lectures. Deeply connected with Pune’s  public life, he became a pillar of the city’s healthcare system. He was regarded  with great respect as a sage-like personality in the medical field.

Dr. Sardesai taught at B. J. Medical College until 1985, during which he  trained many medical professionals. While he taught in English at the college,  he delivered lectures to the public entirely in Marathi. He also wrote  prescriptions and instructions on how to take medicines in Marathi, making  them easier for patients to understand. He also served as the president of  several institutions.
