And So Begins the Shriganesha of Life's Canvas
Shriram Bhat
Who is it that moves within this sky, the sky that gives room and space to vowels and consonants? And in that sky named kha, which insistent motion is it that stirs? The knowledge that goes searching for this is Shri Ganesha's own — the Shriganesha-vidya.
Catching the tone of a, aa, i, ee, taking the support of the consonant ka within the sky called kha, it asks: who am I? Or, to which insistence am I clinging as I move? The knowledge that pursues that question is the umbilical cord of para-vani, born at the root navel from the muladhara chakra. It is the mother of the whole cosmos, she who gives birth to shabda-brahma — and this is Shriganesha-vidya. It is, in truth, the very beginning of the worldly expanse of adi-prakriti. It is the identity card of creation itself.
To know Shriganesha-vidya, and to dissolve into the supreme principle that sense of "I" belonging to prakriti, which wraps itself around vowels and consonants in the form of air — this must be the practice of the human being who carries a mind, the discipline proper to his nature. That is what Shriganesha-vidya teaches. And that is why the beginning of any body of knowledge is made with obeisance to Shri Ganesha; and so it should be made.
The kernel of every field of knowledge lies hidden in Shriganesha-vidya, which has the form of Omkara. Turning the ko'ham of ka into so'ham, the practice of Omkara draws one close to the supreme state of the Paramatma within the sky called kha — and that practice is Shriganesha-vidya. This is why, by circling Adi-Shankara and Mother Parvati, Shri Ganesha encompassed the infinite cosmos in a few moments, and in doing so revealed the heart of Shriganesha-vidya. It is why, on entering any temple, one bows first to Shri Ganesha before stepping into the sanctum of the deities.
Shri Ganesha is himself the sanctum of the wisdom of all spiritual knowledge. Catching the root note of all four forms of speech — para, pashyanti, madhyama and vaikhari — he dissolves the human mind. That mind has come clutching the hard insistence of ego, through countless births and through a hell of its own making under the affliction of the planets. This wandering mind he leads into the sanctum of wisdom, grants it release, and dissolves it into the supreme principle.
The Shri Ganesha Atharvashirsha is the very essence of the adhiyajna that the Lord speaks of in the Gita. This cosmos, pervaded by the five great elements, is itself an act; and the prakriti of those five elements stays close to the supreme state of the Paramatma. The Atharvashirsha tells us the secret of living within that supreme state of prakriti. And Shriganesha-vidya shows us how, holding that secret in the intellect, to live in the condition of the supreme witness. So one should keep returning to the Ganesha Atharvashirsha again and again, and rid one's life of the eclipse of ego-bound intellect — or better, never let that eclipse fall at all.
Shri Dnyandev, bowing to Shri Ganesha, says in one place:
Encircled by the fortress of the three gunas, imprisoned within the fort of separate existence — he was set free by Atma-Shambhu, through the remembrance of you.
The sense of the verse is this: Shriganesha-vidya makes the Ravana who sits in that fort of separate existence concede defeat through sheer skill of intellect, and teaches him his lesson.
The verses that follow carry the whole essence of Shriganesha-vidya:
If it be so, then I alone am all this; then by whom have I not been worshipped? Whole and unbroken, this all lies in the mouths of all, offered to me alone, and offered effortlessly. Only because they do not know this do the foolish fail to reach me.
This umbilical cord of Shri Ganesha-vidya is bound to the muladhara chakra. The mother-note that dwells in the muladhara is the one that declares the principle: as in the body, so in the cosmos. Shriganesha-vidya, which draws close to that note, keeps reminding us always of the abhanga that says: to stand at the door of God even for a moment is to attain all four liberations.
In the fearsome Kali Yuga we now inhabit, the chatter of vaikhari — the sheer noise of human speech — has grown enormously. In such an age of egoic clamour, the life-practice of Shriganesha-vidya, which stands "beyond the beyond, supreme past the supreme," has become urgently necessary. So, in the drifting space of this Kali Yuga, upon the soiled slate of body-consciousness, let us make our beginning with Shriganesha-vidya. In the courtyard of the great expanse, chanting gananam tvam ganapatim havamahe, let us offer mind and intellect together as oblation into the fire of knowledge.
Likhita Japa-Sadhana: The Practice of Written Chanting
Rajendra Kher
There are broadly three reasons why a person takes up the practice of japa. The first is that the seeker wants peace of mind. The second is that he hopes to earn merit. The third is that he seeks self-knowledge — and this third motive must surely be counted the highest. We also carry the faith that the Name, however it is taken, reaches God. And so many people of faith meditate, and chant the Name alongside.
But difficulties do arise in the doing. The chief one is this: having sat down to meditate, instead of the mind settling in one place, all manner of subjects — often the very ones we would rather avoid — come surging up and appear before the inner eye. The ease of meditation is lost, and the effort turns into forcing the mind to concentrate. At such a time the subjects that rise up should be allowed to rise; they should be allowed to drain away. The refuse collected in the mind — what the Lord in the Gita calls shoka — takes time to clear. It clears through steadiness and sustained contemplation.
Many have the same experience while chanting with eyes closed. The mouth takes the Name and the mind wanders off somewhere else. The mind has to be brought back, again and again, to the very deity whose Name is being taken. Arjuna says in the Gita: Lord, I will conquer the kingdom of the earth and lay it at your feet — but to hold the mind steady in one place is very hard indeed. Dnyaneshwar Maharaj says that to stand at the door of God even for a moment is to attain all four liberations. Through the ceaseless taking of Hari's Name, all four liberations that lead to self-realisation become attainable.
If this process is to be accomplished faster, then the mind, the object of meditation, and the inner gaze must all be brought into alignment at a single point. For this, the path of likhita japa-sadhana — the written chanting practice — is an excellent option. Chanting should certainly be done; but before it, there is no harm in taking up written chanting to bring those three into alignment. The result is that while writing the japa, the gaze stays on the letters, the mind stays there too, and the Name is accomplished on the lips as well.
In written chanting, it also matters which deity's Name one writes. The Lord says in the Gita: you will go and merge into that which you remember constantly. Here the analogy of the worm and the wasp holds good. The worm holds the wasp constantly in mind, in unbroken contemplation — and so one day the worm itself becomes a wasp. In a gymnasium, no one hangs a photograph of a frail, sickly person. On the contrary, one hangs a picture of the mighty Hanuman, or of a modern bodybuilder. Those images give the one exercising his inspiration. The worm-and-wasp principle applies here too.
So in written chanting, one should write a Name suited to oneself. I myself chant Om Namah Shivaya, and the powerful mantra Om Namah Shivaya shubham shubham kuru kuru Shivaya namah. Names such as Shri Ram jai Ram jai jai Ram; Hare Ram Hare Ram, Ram Ram Hare Hare, Hare Krishna Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hare; and Shri Gajanan jai Gajanan are also chanted. Naturally, one should write with contemplation the Name of whichever form of God one holds faith in. Its benefit is great; but it is especially useful in turning one inward. For the seeker of liberation, the experience of samadhi then does not remain far off. Written chanting lays the foundation of that path.
