Kumaonchi Kanya Mana : Radha Bhat

Whether it is the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand or the story of Mana, as one reads, it feels strikingly familiar—similar experiences can be found in Konkan, Vidarbha, Marathwada, and across many parts of India. The region may change, the landscape may differ, and customs may vary, but the neglect and indifference toward girls and women remain a common reality throughout the country.

Today, one feels compelled to say: first, give girls the chance to be born; and if they are born, give them the opportunity to preserve and nurture their existence with dignity. In remote and rural areas, especially for girls, many obstacles still stand in the way of access to education and enlightenment. Yet, despite countless barriers, the old doors that once remained firmly shut are now beginning to open—slowly and reluctantly, but surely.

As Mana walks the path illuminated by education, becoming self-reliant and preserving her self-respect while inspiring countless other girls to follow the same path, she feels familiar and relatable to us. This ability to feel both unique and deeply connected is the distinctive strength of this novel.

While reading it, one cannot help but feel that for the daughters of Savitribai in Maharashtra, Mana could well seem like an elder sister—a guiding and inspiring presence on their journey toward empowerment.
